2001scape
2001scape is an open source project to accurately re-create RS Classic just before the introduction of the Fishing skill on 11 June 2001. It's a very different game than later versions, and in many ways feels like a punishing multiplayer survival game. A lot of game content which is no longer useful in later versions is very useful in 2001scape.
Among its more interesting features:
- Full world PvP with very limited safe zones - mostly banks and the small town of Lumbridge.
- No safe item banking - when you die you lose all of your items. Only Coins can be safely stored in the bank. This also means many efficient play methods in RS Classic that use the item bank don't work, and things like Doric's anvils and the Cook's Range are now very useful.
- GoodMagic and EvilMagic, with magic spells existing that temporarily increase the player's stats when cast on yourself.
- No teleport spells, but a relatively small and simple world to explore on foot.
- No Fatigue system or other attempts at anti-cheating features that make the game more difficult to play.
2001scape is definitely my favorite version of RuneScape due to its simplicity and rough survival mechanics. I like how it encourages being creative with gameplay styles.
I love how the Cooking skill works before Fishing, it's a very valuable skill to train due to scaling heals, and complicated recipes (like Pies) are worth making.
